Our Program

The USC Cardiovascular Thoracic Institute’s cardiac electrophysiology program at Keck Medicine of USC offers specialized treatment to patients who are diagnosed with arrhythmias and/or heart failure. Sudden cardiac death remains the major cause of death from cardiovascular disease in the United States. It is thought to be due to uncontrolled ventricular arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), often in the setting of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) or due to electrical abnormalities in the heart.

With the availability of electrophysiological mapping and program stimulation, abnormalities of both atrial and ventricular electricity and arrhythmias can be evaluated. Currently developed ablation techniques (the surgical removal of tissue) are now able to treat problems, such as Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW). And recently, atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation have also been successfully treated by ablation.

In addition, program specialists can treat appropriate patients with drug therapy or placement of an automatic implantable cardioverter/defibrillator (AICD) without the need for cardiac surgery. The program is supported by a full-time teaching faculty, nurses and technicians experienced in electrophysiological problems.

The USC cardiac electrophysiology team is unique in providing efficient consultation and coordination with other top USC specialists in the areas of:

  • Electrophysiology studies and radiofrequency catheter ablation
  • Pacemaker, cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization device (CRT) implantation and follow-up
  • Investigational ablation and device therapies
  • Individualized medical therapy
  • Risk assessment
  • Novel surgical procedures
  • Alternative / adjunctive therapies

Our Approach

Our understanding of the processes that lead to heart failure enables us to take effective steps to change the course of the disease. The cardiac electrophysiology program is dedicated to treating a patient as a whole person and to delivering the highest level of comprehensive care. We integrate the efforts of various USC physicians and nurse specialists who treat heart failure. Our mission is to provide patients with treatments that slow disease progression, prolong survival and improve quality of life.

Patients have a team that will monitor and work with you to tailor therapies to your specific needs. Recognized leaders in the area of heart failure and arrhythmias evaluate patient conditions and consult with physicians to discuss findings and recommendations. We work closely with patients to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the treatment plan. It is very important to us that our patients are comfortable with the therapies agreed upon.
